lyrics

Verse 1 & 2
It aches enough to mention
I was feeling fine but the fine is slowly fading
No one comes around, I keep a gaze out the window
Take my medicine, keep pressing on

Up the steps into the thickened mud
Run, walk or crawl, not a good time to give up
Gonna to search undergrowth, reveal/unearth/harrow a reason
Gonna eat my lemons, holler to heaven

Chorus
it’s quiet now, for crying out loud
but I won’t let the heaviness take control
pressing on me, so I may taste and see
the fruit of promise, the root of my extol

Verse 3 & 4
Stand perched, the ground seems really far away
Step off the ledge try to befriend gravity
Been pinioned long enough, and if I hit the ground
Dust off my feathers, climb up again

It rains like the oceans got turned upside down
Been acting like that crazy Pagliacci clown
Going to keep my head, pointed towards the curling sun
eat my lemons, sing out like Evan

Chorus
it’s quiet now, for crying out loud
but I won’t let the heaviness take control
pressing on me, so I may taste and see
the fruit of promise, the root of my extol

KEEP PRESSING ON…

about

Smiley Kaul Saint Paul, Minnesota

Ancient, winsome, harrowing delight! Fashioned by the giants of song such as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, Smiley sees himself as more psalmist than songwriter, more carnival barker than balladeer, writing "new psalms for that old-time gospel." Musically, Smiley is heavily influenced by punk rock, hip hop, ambient music and the hymns of yesteryear. ... more
